Mahanayake Davuldena Thera bids farewell to the nation

The funeral of the chief prelate of Sri Lanka Amarapura Nikaya, Most Venerable Davuldena Gnanissara Thera was held with State honours at the Independence Square in Colombo this afternoon.

The Maha Sangha from the 3 main Nikayas, other priests of different religious denominations, President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and large crowds of monks and laymen were present.

The remains of the late Nayake Thera were escorted from Sri Vidya Vijayaramaya on Pagoda Road Nugegoda in a special vehicular parade at 1pm.

The escort paraded past Pitakotte Junction, Athul Kotte, Parliament Road, Ayurveda Junction, Castle Street, D.S. Junction, Horton Place and Lotus Roundabout before it reached Independence Square.

The Sri Lanka Army received the remains at the Lotus Junction and escorted it to Independence Square along Independence Avenue.

The Army afforded a 17 gun salute in honour of the late Nayake Thera.

After the funeral orations were delivered by the Maha Sangha, President Maithripala Sirisena addressed the gathering.

Soon after the funeral rites were performed, the lighting of the funeral pyre was held amid a guard of honor by the tri forces this evening.
