10 persons have died after a part of the Meethotamulla garbage dump had collapsed damaging several houses in the area.

4 among those killed were children.

12 others who were injured were admitted to the National Hospital while 7 continue to receive treatment.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Priyantha Jayakody stated that over 40 houses in the Dahampura area were destroyed.

Nearly 400 personnel from the Tri Forces and Special Task Force have been deployed in rescuing those believed to have been trapped following the collapse of the garbage mound.

Army Spokesperson Brigadier Roshan Senevirathna stated that an information desk has been set up to provide information to the affected people.

Meanwhile, the residents in the area had protested when a group including Minister A.H.M. Fawzi visited the scene.

In addition, the government requested the general public to refrain from visiting the scene, as it could hamper rescue operations.
