The death toll from the Meethotamulla tragedy has risen to 17.

On a Presidential directive, 600 tri service personnel, Policemen, Special Task Force personnel are currently engaged in relief operations after evacuating the victims as well as their valuables from affected houses in close coordination with the workforce of the Disaster Management Centre.

Deputy Foreign Minister Harsha de Silva said that the government has identified two temporary sites to dump the garbage.
