Rescue efforts continue in search of those missing in Meethotamulla; Death toll rises to 20

Head of the Landslides Studies Unit of the National Building Research Organization R M S Bandara said that residents of nearly 130 houses in Meethotamulla have been requested to evacuate due to the risk of another landslide in the area.

A group of specialists from the Peradeniya University and Officials from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau were called in to inspect the area yesterday.

The death toll from the Meethotamulla tragedy has risen to 20.

12 persons who were injured are currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital.

Relief operations are continuing in Meethotamulla where 145 houses were damaged.

625 persons belonging to 180 families who were displaced have been given temporary shelter at the Terrance De Silva College in Kolonnawa.

An information desk has been set up at the Meethotamulla Sri Rahula Vidyalaya.

Over 650 personnel from the Tri Forces have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.

Army Spokesperson Brigadier Roshan Senevirathna stated that 3, MI – 17 helicopters and a Bell 212 are on standby.

In the meantime, Minister of Law and Order and Southern Province Development Sagala Rathnayaka has instructed affected persons to remove their belongings from the houses with the support of the Military Personnel who have been deployed to provide relief.

Meanwhile Police Media Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakody stated that 20 persons who attempted to rob the damaged houses in Meethotamulla were arrested.
