The Ministry of Finance announced yesterday that a maximum compensation of one hundred thousand rupees would be given as compensation to the families of the victims of the Meethotamulla tragedy.

The maximum compensation to be given for property damage is 2.5 million rupees.

However, following a media briefing held with the Minister of Disaster Management Anura Piyadarshana Yapa, he noted that the government has not yet arrived at a final decision with regard to compensation.

Issuing a communiqué the Ministry of Finance later noted that the families of the victims would be provided with one hundred thousand rupees compensation.

This would be provided by the ministry, through the national insurance trust fund, under the insurance scheme active for natural disasters.

The Ministry of Finance also emphasized that the treasury will allocate compensation for the families of victims, and issue necessary provisions for the responsible units in order to take immediate action, as soon as the government finalises the decision.
