The Colombo Municipal Council has started dumping city garage at the Karadiyana garbage yard in Piliyandala on a temporary basis.

This is on a court order issued by the Kesbewa Magistrate Court.

Accordingly, 350 metric tons of garbage has been allowed to be dumped in Karadiyana from April 17 – April 28.

The Chairman of Waste management Authority Ruvini Dharmasiri said that 130 to 160 lorry loads of garbage were transported to Karadiyana yesterday and today.

Meanwhile, another protest was held against dumping garbage which is transported from Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha limit in Muturajawela.

The protesters have sent back two tractors which brought garbage during the protest.

Our correspondent stated that demonstrators raised objections against Minister John Amaratunga who visited the scene during the protest.

Meanwhile, a group of residents in Dompe staged a protest today against dumping garbage transported from Colombo.

The protest was held near the Maligawatta sports ground in Kirindiwela.

The protestors forcibly sent back several truck loads of garbage.

Meanwhile, a heap of garbage was dumped on the road near old St. John’s fish market, which caused the area to smell of rancid odours this morning.

In addition, residents of Kotikawatta were also engaged in a protest against the transporting garbage from Kolonnawa to the Kotikawatta area.

Protestors also blocked the Colombo-Avissawella Road and engaged in the protest near the Kotikawatta cemetery.
