Presidential meeting decides to remove limit on compensation for destroyed houses in Meethotamulla

The government has decided to remove the upper limit of compensation proposed to be paid to the residents of Meethotamulla whose houses were destroyed or damaged in the collapse of the garbage mount.

Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that this decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the President this morning.

Accordingly, the market value of the houses will be paid after assessment.

The minister also said that the government has decided to allocate 98 houses from the Salamulla Housing Scheme of Urban Development Authority.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who returned home after his tour of Vietnam this morning, visited the people affected by the Meethotamulla incident.

Our correspondent stated that the Premier looked into the needs of the people during a meeting held at Rahula Vidyalaya in Meethotamulla.

Day 6 of the search operation continued today.

32 bodies have been recovered so far and, 8 more persons are still missing following the disaster.
