Protest in several areas rejecting garbage from Colombo

Protests were held in several areas today as well against transporting garbage from Colombo and dumping them in their localities.

Our correspondent stated that a tense situation erupted in such protests held at Karadiyana in Piliyandala and as well as in Dompe.

Protestors of Karadiyana who blocked Verahera Ratmalana Road near Borupona Bridge expressed their objection to bringing garbage from Colombo in this manner.

However, Manager in charge of the Waste Management Project at Karadiyana stated that Colombo Municipal Council has been permitted to dump a limited weight of garbage in his plant.

Meanwhile, residents staged a protest near the Garbage Processing Yard at Dompe against transporting garbage from Colombo to the yard.

Residents also raised objections towards UNP MP Harshana Rajakaruna when the latter visited the scene.

The protestors stated that only garbage collected from Dompe area should be dumped in the Garbage Processing Yard at Dompe.

Meanwhile, a group of residents at Pattiyawela staged a protest against dumping garbage from Wattala and Colombo in Muturajawela. Consequently, several truck loads of garbage were sent back due to the protest.

In addition, residents in Dambuwa Watta in Veyangoda staged a protest at Kalagedihena Junction against transporting garbage from outside areas to their locality.

Traffic on Colombo Kandy main road was blocked due to the protest.  

At the same time, our correspondents reported that a protest was held in Kotikawatta too rejecting to transporting garbage from Kolonnawa and dumping them in their locality.
