President says an independent investigation will be conducted over Meethotamulla incident

President Maithripala Sirisena said today that a committee chaired by a retired judge will be appointed to probe the garbage mound collapse in Meethotamulla.

During a meeting with the heads of media institutions held in Colombo this morning, the president said the committee will find out as to who should be held responsible for the tragedy.

The President has instructed to submit him the report within a month.

Meanwhile, President Sirisena also stated that a full change in the government sector mechanism will be made within the next two weeks.

Accordingly, a big reshuffle will be made in the top positions of the government sector.

In addition, the President said that the government will answer all allegations made against it thereby entering a new economic advent this year.

He also reiterated that the economy has rebounded and is moving on correct track with a record of foreign reserves amounting to 5 billion US dollars.

At the same time, President Sirisena said that the National Audit Draft Bill will be presented to parliament soon.

He also said that the Malabe Private Medical School will be kept under an administrative board to ascertain whether it is maintaining the standards of medical education.

Speaking further during the meeting with heads of media institutions, President Sirisena stated that he has no intention to change the pledges he gave before the nation on January 8, 2015.

The president also said that he is ready to abolish the executive presidency or to curtail its extreme powers.
