Aerial inspection of Meethotamulla garbage mount carried out

The technical team from japan that arrived to probe the Meetotamulla garbage mount slide is scheduled to continue their inspection today

National Building Research Organisation Senior Geologist Padmakumara Jayasighe said that the team which arrived in the island last afternoon have already carried out the initial phase of  their investigation.

The senior geologist said that the visiting team would further their investigation   through an analysis of the site from an aerial view via photography.

Meanwhile  Military media spokesman Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne said that search operation carried out by the army would continue on.

The military media spokesman also said that a group consisting of about 1100 personnel drawn from the three armed forces were now assisting with relief efforts in the area,

Brigadier Seneviratne said that the search operation has covered approximately half of the land area impacted by the garbage mount slide.

About  240 persons have been evacuated from the risk zone in meethotamulla .

The residents have been given temporary shelter at Terence N. De Silva College.

In related news,  police used tear gas and water canons  to disperse local protesters voicing their objections to garbage being dumped in the vicinity of the  Dompe Maligawatta garbage compound.

Our reporters said that the protesters had remained at the site till  midnight.

Meanwhile President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday that  a committee spear headed by  a retired judge will be appointed for probing the Meetotamulla garbage mount slide.

Participating in a discussion with heads of  media institutions,  held yesterday at the Presidential secretariat, the president said that the committee would work towards determining who should be held responsible for the meethotamulla tragedy.
