Garbage truck attacked at Wattala - Dumping garbage at Dompe temporarily suspended

Area residents from Nugape – Bopitiya – Wattala staged two protests today against dumping garbage collected in Colombo at the Muthurajawela reserve.   

A tense situation erupted between police and the protestors when garbage trucks arrived at the premises.

The protestors have attacked a garbage truck and police media spokesperson, DIG Priyantha Jayakody stated that one person was arrested in connection to the incident.

However, our correspondents stated that the garbage trucks were taken to the garbage disposal site.

Meanwhile, a group of residents engaged in a silent protest today against dumping garbage at the Karadiyana – Werahera waste disposal site.

A restraining order was issued by the Kesbewa Magistrate Court yesterday preventing public protests near the Karadiyana waste disposal site today.

Furthermore, Boralesgamuwa police also had obtained a restraining order from Gangodawila Magistrate Court against the protests.

The courts had stated that a peaceful protest can be allowed; however, unruly behaviour disrupting traffic will be prohibited.

However, our regional correspondents stated that around 22 garbage trucks had arrived at the Karadiyana – Werahera waste disposal site today.

Meanwhile, all shops in Kirindiwela were closed today opposing dumping garbage at the Maligawaththa waste management project premises in Kirindiwela – Dompe.

Colombo Municipal Council Commissioner, V.K. Anura confirmed the deicison to temporarily suspend the disposal of garbage from Colombo at the Dompe disposal site.

Furthermore, Poogoda magistrate court issued notices on 10 individuals yesterday including deputy minister Dulip Wijesekara, parliamentarian Prasanna Ranathunga, former chairman of the Dompe Pradeshiya Sabha Milan Jayathilake to not disrupt the transportation of garbage to the Dompe waste disposal site.
