Decisive vote taking Over GSP plus this afternoon

The voting by the European parliament on a resolution, presented by a group of its members whether to restore GSP+ to Sri Lanka will be held at 3pm Sri Lanka time today.

Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva who is currently in Belgium stated that the majority of the EU parliament would vote in support of Sri Lanka.

Two EU member groups presented the resolution demanding not to restore GSP+ to Sri Lanka alleging the country has not fulfilled its responsibilities towards human rights.

European Parliament is comprised of 751 members.

In the event 373 members vote for the resolution, Sri Lanka would not get the much awaited concessions under GSP+.

Speaking to our news team from Brussels, Dr. Harsha de Silva told us that he had discussions with the MPs who signed into the so called resolution.
