Dr Mahesh Jayaweera of the Moratuwa University who is part of the team conducting investigations at Meethotamulla stated that flammable gasses are emitting from the garbage mound.

He expressed these views following inspections carried out by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Province Development, National Building Research Organization and few other institutes.

Meanwhile, Chief Engineer of the Sri Lanka Army Major General Dananjith Karunarathna said that another part of the garbage mound was at risk of collapsing.

Officials who arrived at the location stated that those in the danger zone had been advised to evacuate.

However, some residents alleged that they were not informed regarding a landslide risk.
