Court of Appeal ruled today that Galle District UPFA MP Geetha Kumarasinghe cannot hold an MP post as she contested in the elections as a dual citizen.

Appeal Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena issued the decision with the agreement of Appeal Court Chairperson, Judge Vijith Malalgoda.

Geetha Kumarasinghe is a dual citizenship owner in Sri Lanka and Switzerland, and thus, 4 voters have filed the petition before the Court of Appeal in the year 2015.

As the Respondents of the case, Immigration and Emigration Controller, Chief Secretary of UPFA and Chief Secretary of the Parliament have been named apart from Geetha kumarasinghe.

When the case was heard on March 14th last year the Attorney General informed the Court that an individual who possesses dual citizenships cannot serve as a Parliamentarian.

Since no evidence has been provided to prove her innocence, attorney general's lawyers have informed the Appeal Court that Geetha cannot be accepted as an MP.

Accordingly, announcing the decision of the petition, Court of Appeal stated that the stance of the attorney general is correct.

Responding to Hiru news team when questioned regarding the case, MP Geetha kumarasinghe voiced that she will be filing a High Court petition challenging the decision given by the Court of Appeal.

In 2015's polls, 6 candidates from Galle District entered into the Parliament as MPs.

Geetha kumarasinghe held the 5th place winning 62,374 votes.

However, if Geetha Kumarasinghe loses her position, 7th in the list, former Minister Piyasena Gamage would be able to become an MP.

No:of votes he won in 2015 polls was 45,245.
