Geetha is replaced with Piyasena Gamage; Election Commissioner says no decision as yet

UPFA General Secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the party recommended Piyasena Gamage to the parliament seat after Geetha Kumarasinghe was removed from it on a Court order.

Minister Amaraweera announced this while responding to a journalist at a media conference held in Colombo today.

Parliament Secretary General has already informed the election Commission that the seat held by Geetha Kumarasinghe has been vacated now.

The Court of Appeal decided that Geetha Kumarasinghe cannot sit in parliament as she holds citizenship in Sri Lanka and Switzerland on May 3rd.

Parliament Secretary General has informed the matter to the Election Commission after seeking legal advice from the Attorney General.

Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dassanayake told our news team that Geetha Kumarasinghe can no longer sit in parliament.

Meanwhile, Geetha Kumarasinghe filed a petition with the Supreme Court today challenging the Appeal Court verdict.

Geetha Kumarasinghe, in her petition has named the speaker of parliament, Parliament Secretary General and the Chairman of the Election Commission as respondents in her case.

Our news team contacted Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya to comment on the matter.

He said that no decision has been taken yet about a replacement for Geetha Kumarasinghe.

Election Commission Deshapriya also said that a decision will be taken after consulting the other members of the commission.

Meanwhile, Geetha Kumarasinghe has handed over the election commission some documents relating to the petition she filed with the Supreme Court this afternoon.
