An Inquiry looking into Gal Vihara Buddha Statue being covered with a shawl

The department of Archaeology has launched an investigation looking into an incident where the reclining Buddha Statue at the historical Gal Viharaya in Polonnaruwa has been covered with a shawl.

Director General of the Department Professor Senarath Dissanayake told our news team that a complaint has also been made to Polonnaruwa police as the incident has violated archaeological regulations.

Our news team also contacted the trustee of the Polonnaruwa Solosmastana, Venerable Kandaketiye Aththa Dassi Thera , to comment on the incident.

The Thera said covering the statue with a shawl is part of the Kapruka pooja and, the Director General has no right to impose a ban on conducting offerings and poojas.
