Indian Prime Minister arrives in the island

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the island this evening to take part in the United Nations’ 14th Vesak Day celebrations.

Our correspondent at the airport stated that the premier who arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in a special aircraft, was welcomed by Premier Ranil Wickramasinghe.

The police headquarters noted that the lanes in Katunayake Expressway towards Colombo, the stretch of baseline road from Peliyagoda  to D.S. junction, and the stretch of road through Nelum Pokuna, Library junction, Pittala junction, and Gangarama Seemamalaka was closed from 6.15 PM as the Indian Prime Minister will be taking part in religious observances in Colombo.

Furthermore, the road from Nawam Mawatha to Galle Face roundabout will be closed at 7.15 PM.

The police headquarters further noted that Galle Face road will be closed from 8.20 PM until 10.30 PM as the Indian prime minister is scheduled to meet President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s House.

Meanwhile, police announced that vehicles which transport people to watch Vesak Zones in Colombo will be seized if they are parked disturbing adjacent roads.

In a communiqué issued today, police said such vehicles will be taken to nearby police stations.

The owners will be compelled to pay the fee for towing, before they claim their vehicles from the respective police stations.
