Tear gas was fired at the protestors of Inter University Students’ Federation at several locations this afternoon.

The protest march was organized based on 15 issues including abolishing the Malabe Private Medical School.

The protest was organized by the Inter University Students’ Federation, Medical Faculty Student Activists’ Committee, and Inter University Bikkhu Federation.

The protestors began the march from the Fort Railway station and proceeded along D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha to Union Place.

However the protestors attempted to take Braybrooke Place and Park Street to reach Town Hall as roads were closed from Ibbanwala junction.

The first tear gas attack was unleashed when the protestors attempted to march towards Town Hall from the Viharamahadevi Park.

Secondly, tear gas was fired near the Nelum Pokuna Theatre as the protestors attempted to enter Town Hall.

Our correspondents reported that tear gas was fired on several occasions to disperse protestors as they gathered in different points of the Viharamahadevi Park.

Commuters and others at the park during the incident were also inconvenienced due to unexpected firing of tear gas.

At the same time, traffic on surrounding roads, especially 138 and 120 routes were severely disrupted due to the tense situation.

Meanwhile, a request by the Peliyagoda police to prevent the protest was rejected by Courts.

At the same time, Colombo Chief Magistrate had issued an injunction at a request by Cinnamon Gardens police yesterday.

However, our correspondents stated that the protestors did not heed the Court ruling when it was handed over to them by police at Fort Railway Station.

Meanwhile, 17 University students injured and admitted to National Hospital following today's anti SAITM protest march in Colombo; Several students arrested.
