Cabinet approves draft local government election amendment Act

The amendment bill with regard to the local government elections was approved by the cabinet of ministers yesterday.

Following direction given by the Attorney General on certain clauses of the bill requiring a special majority, the bill was recompiled in a manner which could be passed by a simple majority following discussions held with officers of the local government, attorney generals department and compilations officers.

Further the mechanism on presenting candidates for the multi- member commissions have been included into the bill in accordance with the aspects pointed out by the elections commission.

Accordingly, cabinet approval was received to present the bill in parliament after gazetting.
