Owner of collapsed building in Wellawatte arrested

The owner of the building in near the Savoy cinema in Wellawatte which collapsed has been arrested.

This was when the person in question had surrendered to Police.

Allegations were raised by many quarters regarding the standard of the building while the National Building Research Organization said that its approval had not been obtained.

Permission had been initially obtained for a 3 storey building but it had been extended to 5 stories and it had collapsed when construction was being carried out to further expand the building up to 7 floors.

Meanwhile, search operations are continuing to rescue a 60 year old female who is believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

The body of another 20 year old youth was recovered yesterday taking the total death toll to 2.

Meanwhile, Minister of Western Province Development and Megapolis Patali Champika Ranawaka stated that all unauthorized construction will be removed during the next 3 months.
