Donald Trump made the short trip from Jerusalem to Bethlehem today to meet Mahmud Abbas, who was hoping to convince the unpredictable US president to remain committed to an independent Palestinian state.

His talks in Bethlehem with the Palestinian president came after Trump yesterday made a heavily symbolic visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem and met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said he will "do everything" to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.

At talks with Mahmoud Abbas, he spoke of being gratified that the Palestinian leader had committed to taking necessary steps to "fight terrorism".

Israel and the Palestinians have not held peace talks for three years.

This is the last day of the US president's visit to the Middle East.
