Navy rescue teams have launched search operations after 19 fishing boats were reported missing in the sea off Eravur in Batticaloa.

Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walakuluge stated that Navy Dora boats have been deployed in the mission.

Meanwhile, a fisherman who fell into the sea when his boat capsized due to strong winds in the Nilaveli Sea was rescued by his fellow fishermen.

Meanwhile, the Met Department states that heavy rain and strong winds could be expected in the coastal areas around the country as the South Western monsoon has activated.

The Department stated that wind speeds could rise from 60 to 70 kilometers per hour in the coastal belt from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

It also warned the fisheries and naval communities to take precautions when venturing into sea.
