Several low lying areas in Galle, Matara, Ratnapura and Kalutara districts have flooded due to heavy rainfall this morning.

Our correspondents stated that Pitabaddara, Kotapola and Akuressa in the Matara district, Elapaatha in the Ratnapura district and Walallaavita in the Kalutara district are all experiencing severe flooding.

The Heaviest rainfall was experienced in Galle district.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center stated that Ging and Nil-walaa rivers are overflowing.

Irrigation Department Aquatic Science Division Directress Premaa Hattiarachchi

said Kelani and Kalu rivers have reached flood level.

Director of the Center Pradeep Kodippili said residents in surrounding low lying areas have been warned to take precautionary measures.

Heavy showers experienced in the catchment areas ahve brought an end to the prolonged drought .

Media spokesman of the Power and Renewable Energy Ministry Sulakshana Jayawardana said the highest rainfall has been reported in the catchments of Lakshapana Hydro Power house.
