Sri Lanka has requested the United Nations to provide assistance in addressing the natural disaster situation affecting several areas.

The Foreign Ministry stated that they have activated the emergency response unit considering the situation.

Following the request made, Indian medical teams and emergency relief arrived on board a vessel which reached the Colombo harbour this morning.

India is sending another ship due to arrive on Monday after Sri Lanka issued an international appeal for help.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India regrets the loss of lives and property in Sri Lanka due to flooding and that they stand with Sri Lankan brothers and sisters in hour of need.
