Flood level at Galanigama on Southern Expressway is increasing; All light vehicles towards Colombo should be exited from Welipanna Int'change.

The irrigation department says that even though there is a decrease in rainfall, flood situation prevails in the low lying areas of rivers.   

The department noted that this situation is mostly prevalent In the Kelani and Nilawala rivers.

The Irrigation director for Galle and Matara noted that as there is a risk of the bunt constructed to prevent flooding from breaking, those residing in and around the areas were evacuated.

Those residing in the lower areas of the Kelani river, are facing the risk of floods.

 Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center convened a media briefing this afternoon to inform about the relief measures taken.

Army spokesperson Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne noted that 1500 army officers have been deployed for the operations.

Further, vessels of the navy and 68 teams have been deployed in the rescue operations.

30 boats, and 400 officers have been deployed by the navy for relief and rescue operations.

It was also revealed that 9 helicopters of the airforce were also deployed for operations today.

It has been reported that the triforces were able to rescue 3927 individuals during rescue missions.

Minister of home affairs,Wajira Abeywardena participating at the media conference noted that a new circular has been issued for state officials to contribute to the relief operations without any issues.

Meanwhile, head of landslides unit of the national buildings research institute, R.M.S. Bandara noted that the landslide warning issued to 8 districts has not been lifted.
