Death toll from adverse weather rises to 122; 97 missing; Over 400,000 affected

122 individuals have died while 97 others are reported missing due to the disaster situation affecting 15 districts in the island.

Colombo, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Gampaha, Kandy, Matale, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu, Vavunia and Batticaloa districts were affected by inclement weather conditions.

415 thousand 618 person have been affected in these districts.

86 thousand 316 persons are given temporary shelter at 290 relief camps.

Meanwhile, several areas in the vicinity of the Kelani River namely Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, Biyagama, Padukka, Hanwella, Dompe, Malwana and Awissawella areas are flooded.

Matara, Galle, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts are severely affected by the disaster situation.

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippilli stated that rescue and relief operations are continuing covering all affected areas.

Army spokesperson Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne noted that 1500 army officers have been deployed for the operations.

Meanwhile, the Navy has also deployed 68 relief teams along with 30 boats.

3,927 persons have been rescued.

Meanwhile, the head of landslides unit of the national building research organization, R.M.S. Bandara noted that the landslide warning issued has not been lifted in 8 districts.
