22 million rupees from China to provide relief; An aircraft carrying relief items arrives in the island

The Buddhist Association of China donated 22 million rupees to President Maithripala Sirisena this morning in order to provide relief to those affected by the inclement weather.

President Maithripala Sirisena stated that the donation will be used to reconstruct the houses that were damaged due to the adverse weather conditions.

The president has further stated that such supportive measures extended by the Chinese government strengthen the long standing bilateral relations between the two countries.  

Meanwhile, a special aircraft carrying relief items from China for those affected by the inclement weather, arrived at Katunayake International Airport this afternoon.

Our correspondent at the airport stated that the aircraft has brought relief materials worth over 2.2 million US dollars.

600 tents, 5,000 bed sheets, 20,000 life jackets and 1,000 safety shoes are among the relief items received.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake as well as the Minster of Disaster Management, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa were present at the airport to receive the relief materials.

Our correspondent at the airport stated that the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka was also present representing the Government of China.

Meanwhile, the ships Chang Chun, Jing Zhou and Chao Hu of the Chinese Navy that carried relief materials for those affected by the inclement weather, departed the port of Colombo today.  

Sri Lanka Navy stated that the ships brought 5 medical teams and 10 small boats to assist in disaster relief operations.
