Risks of landslides continue to prevail; 25,000 still sheltered at makeshift camps

The landslide warning that was issued for 7 districts was extended for another 24 hours from 2 PM today.

The National Building Research Organization stated that Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya districts will pose risks of earth slips and embankment collapses if continuous rainfall prevails.  

Meanwhile, the death toll from inclement weather now stands at 224 while 78 individuals are still reported to be missing.

The Disaster Management Centre noted that 698,289 individuals in 179,376 families have been affected by the inclement weather.

The highest number of deaths have been reported from Ratnapura district which stands at 86.

The death toll in Kalutara district was reported to be 65 while the death toll in Matara district was reported to be 44.

2,093 houses have been completely destroyed while another 11,056 houses have been partially destroyed in the disaster stricken areas.

The Disaster Management Centre also noted that 25,245 displaced persons have been sheltered at 225 makeshift camps.

Meanwhile, the MET department stated that an increase in showers can be expected in the south western region of the country, tonight.

Accordingly, the MET department stated that Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and Wayamba provinces will experience showers from time to time while Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces will experience slightly heavy showers.
