Schools in disaster affected areas reopen; However student attendance is poor

The Education Ministry stated that the student attendance was very low when government schools were reopened today in the disaster affected areas.

Kalutara Zonal Director Priyani Mudalige told our news team that the reason for low attendance is loss of houses of many students.

At the same time, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Education Director Sepala Kuruppu Aarachchi said a low attendance of students was reported today.

He also said cleaning activities are still continuing in many schools in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, Maputugala Maha Vidyalaya in Ingiriya was closed this morning after Building Research Organization declared the area is prone to earthslips.

The area experienced heavy rain this morning.

At the same time, Disaster Management Center stated that 717 thousand 622 persons of 184 thousand 265 families who were hit by the disaster still remain in makeshift camps.

212 persons died and 79 persons are still missing following the disaster.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam who visited historical Pahiyangala cave said that the government has drawn its attention to launch a conservation project for Pahiyangala.
