Several political parties and media organizations have condemned the act by tourism and Christian religious affairs minister John Amaratunga in which he attempted to assault a HIRU reporter by threatening and scolding him in abusive language yesterday.

Joint Opposition Convener MP Prasanna Ranatunga says in a statement that it is surprising to note why representatives of civil organizations who clamoured over alleged threats on media freedom during the Rajapaksa regime are now tight-lipped over threats to media freedom.

All Ceylon Journalists Association also issued a communiqué condemning John Amaratunga’s threatening and abusive language towards media personnel.

The National Media guild has also issued a communiqué condemning the behavior of minister Amaratunga.

Meanwhile, another media communiqué was issued under the signature of Minister John Amaratunga’s media secretary today.

The communiqué quoted minister Amaratunga requesting media persons not to misuse media freedom restored by the current government.

Given below is the reevant statement.
