OIC attached to Nanu Oya Police Station was temporarily transferred to Nuwara Eliya as a tense situation erupted following a 7-year old school girl being killed in a motor accident this morning.

A senior police officer in charge of the area told our news team that an inquiry has been ordered on two other police officers with regard to the incident.

7-year old Devmini Akarsha who was proceeding to school this morning died on the spot when a speeding tipper hit against her on a passenger level crossing in Nanu Oya town.

Angry residents gave vent to their anger by setting fire on the tipper started protest thereby blocking traffic on the Nuwara Eliya Hatton road at Nanu Oya town.

Later police called STF to control the situation.

Nuwara Eliya Magistrate I.R.D. Silva who reached the scene to perform a magistrate inquiry has also returned amid protests by the residents.

Our correspondent stated that shops in the town were also closed after the incident.

The victim who was a student of Sir James Peries Vidyalaya died in tragic circumstances while she was crossing the road along the level crossing near the school.

The suspected driver of the tipper and his assistant had fled the scene after the accident and had surrendered to police.
