16 members of the Northern Provincial Council have started signing a petition to pledge support to Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran

It is reported that 15 have already signed in the document and one member is scheduled to put his signature.

Earlier, 21 members of the council submitted a petition to the Northern Governor requesting him to remove the Chief Minister yesterday.

Later Northern Provincial Governor Reginald Cooray stated that he would inform the Chief Minister to prove his majority in the council.

The controversy started as the chief minister informed two of his ministers to resign from their posts and two other ministers to go on compulsory leave after they were accused of corruption.

Ruling TNA claims 30 seats out of 38 seats of the Northern Provincial Council.  UPFA claims 7 seats while SLMC claims one seat.

It is significant that the 17 members who want to unseat Chief Minister Vigneswaran are from the TNA.

Meanwhile, UPFA member G. Jayathilaka stated that the Northern Governor will give a solution with regard to the existing problem when the sessions open on June 22.

Meanwhile, a meeting between chief minister Vigneswaran and his supporting members was held today.

Members representing EPRLF, PLOT and TELO as well as several members of Tamil Arasu party joined in the discussion.

At the same time, our correspondent stated that a demonstration was held in support of the chief minister in front of the Provincial Council building this afternoon.
