Hartal began at several locations in the Northern Province today, t ovice their objections against the no confidence motion that was brought against Northern Provincial Chief Minister C.V. Wigneshwaran.

Our correspondents stated that many retail outlets have been closed in Jaffna, Mulaitivu, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya districts and black flags have been hoisted outside the businesses.

Local transport services have been stopped and only those buses that arrived last night were returning this morning.

It is apparent that daily activities of the general public have been disrupted as a result of the hartal.

Meanwhile, our correspondents stated that in contrast,  protests against Wigneshwaran were also being held in Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts.

A special meeting was organized at the residence in Nallur, Jaffna by supporters of Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneshwaran.

A three member committee was appointed by Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneshwaran last September to probe corruption alleged to have taken place in the council.

Chief Minister Wigneshwaran informed the ministers of Agriculture and Education to resign from their posts, after they were accused of the most number of corruption charges.

Another two ministers were asked to take compulsory leave for three months until investigations into charges against them were completed.

In response to this action,  21 members of the council handed over a “no confidence” motion against the Chief Minster on Wednesday afternoon.
