The UN warns that more than 900,000 Sri Lankans are at risk due to the threat to food security as many farmlands were destroyed as a result of the severe drought followed by heavy rains.

World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in a report highlight that the country’s paddy harvest in 2017 stands at approximately 2.7 million tons.

Accordingly, the paddy harvest this year has dropped by about 40% compared to last year.

The organizations thus point out that it is essential to assist farmers to minimize food uncertainty.

Minister of Agriculture, Duminda Dissanayake stated that a task force has been appointed to immediately compile a report on the national food requirement taking into account the loss of crops as a result of natural disasters.
