Shops and other institutions in Bandarawela town have been closed as Hartal is being continued against Uma Oya Multi-purpose Development Project.

Our correspondents stated that residents have hoisted black flags and are engaged in protests.

Passenger transport in Bandarawela town has been crippled due to hartal.

Our correspondent stated that people are marching towards the town along Bandarawela Heel-Oya, Badulla-Bandarawela and Atampitiya- Diyathalawa-Bandarawela roads.

Meanwhile, Police sought an injunction over hartal but the Bandarawela Magistrate has rejected the police request.

Hartal has been organized on several issues including non-payment of compensation to those who have been affected by Uma Oya Multi Purpose development Project and failure by the authorities to take measures to prevent environment degradation.

Meanwhile, journalists questioned about the Uma Oya project at the ongoing media conference to inform Cabinet decision at the Department of Government Information.

Answering journalists, ministers Gayantha Karunathilaka and Dayasiri Jayasekera said that a committee comprising three Cabinet ministers was appointed to look into the matter at the Cabinet meeting yesterday.
