In protest of 62 thousand 500 acres of land in Uva Wellassa being leased out  to an American sugar company, a ritual of crushing coconuts was carried out as part of a Maha-kada-wara pooja by members of Uva Wellassa Binthenna Farm gate protection society in Dehigama,.

The protestors complained that the proposed American sugarcane project would pose a threat to the ancient irrigational civilization, local eco system and archaeological sites in the area.

Several members of the Joint Opposition, environmentalists and artistes participated in the protest.
