The Mahaweli Development and Environment Ministry says that all digging activities connected with the tunnel of the Umaa Oya multi-task development project have been temporarily withheld.

Issuing a communiqué the Ministry said that all digging activities of the tunnel have been put on hold till the underground water leakage is stopped.

Similarly steps have also been taken to remove the drilling machine at the lower portion of the tunnel pathway within the next 10 days.

Reports say that it has also been decided to airlift equipment for research required as per the recommendations of the expert advisor who has come to the country on a request the President has made to the Swiss Government.

In addition a Norwegian expert team is scheduled to arrive in the country on 31st of this month for inspecting the Umaa Oya project.

300 million rupees has also been set apart for assessing the damage caused to the people as a result of the project and paying monetary compensation.
