Indian media have run bold headlines today over the decision taken by Sri Lankan parliament to ban bottom trawler fishing.

This harmful system is widely used by Tamil Nadu fishermen who encroach Sri Lanka waters in the Northern Sea.

According to the new Fisheries Draft Bill passed with amendments yesterday in parliament, those who are found guilty of using bottom trawling would be fined 50,000 rupees and two years jail term.

The Hindu has quoted Jaffna District MP M.A. Sumanthiran as saying that the ban of poaching by bottom trawling is a great victory for the Northern fishermen.

However, Tamil Nadu boat association district secretary, B. Jesuraj stated that the ban imposed by Sri Lanka would be a threat to Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Indian Express quoted Jesuraj as saying that banning bottom trawling would deprive hundreds of Tamil Nadu fishermen of their livelihood.

Sri Lanka parliament passed the new Bill yesterday a few hours after Tamil Nadu Chief Minster K. Palaniswamy wrote again to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Sri Lanka arresting Tamil Nadu fishermen.
