The archaeological advisory board has decided to temporally halt local and foreign tourists from visiting the Rangiri- Dambulla cave temple for the purpose of preservation and examination until further notice.

The advisory board has also decided that once reopened tickets will be issues via the central cultural fund.

The board convened under the patronage of the minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam yesterday during which time the decision was taken.

The ministry of education, issuing a communiqué noted that concerns have been drawn towards the damage and destruction caused to the frescos and statues at the historical site.

It has been decided to install covers in order to prevent insects from entering the temple, and also to carry out a restoration process during this period.
