Chief Incumbent of Dambulla temple refuses to close the temple

Different views have been expressed over the decision taken by the Archaeological Consultation Board to temporarily close the ancient Cave temple in Dambulla.

Addressing a media conference held today, Trustee of the Dambulla Ancient Temple Ambagaswewe Rahula Thera said the cave temple is open for local and foreign tourists.

Speaking at the media conference, SLFP organizer of the Dambulla electorate U.R. Dayanandasiri said that he would resign from his position if steps are taken to close the temple.

The Archaeological Consultation Board decided to issue tickets through the Central Cultural Fund to visit Dambulla cave paintings.

Meanwhile, addressing a media conference held at the Asgiri temple in Kandy today, chief incumbent of the temple Venerable Godagama Mangala Thera said tickets are issued under the supervision of the Buddhist Affairs Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has issued a notice with regard to Dambulla Temple incident a short while ago.

The communiqué stated that it announced the decision taken by the Archaeological Consultation Board.

The communiqué further stated that taking decisions and implementing them are two difference processes and further cause of action with regard to Dambulla Temple will be taken following discussions with the Maha Sangha.
