A tense situation erupted in the North Central Provincial Council following a no confidence motion presented against council chairman T.M.R. Siripala by a group of UNP members today.

Blows were exchanged by the council members during a scuffle and later D.M. Amaratunga of the UNP was elected as the new chairman.

Joint Opposition member H.B. Semasinghe opposed to debate on the no confidence motion, saying that it is unconstitutional.

A tense situation erupted thereafter as UNP Members protested against Semasinghe’s statement.

Later, chairman Siripala adjourned the sessions.

Our correspondent stated that the mace was broken into two pieces when the council members of the two factions fought to grab it.

When chairman Siripala left the council chambers, UNP member D.M. Amaratunga took the chair and moved the no confidence motion amid objections by the Joint Opposition members.

However, only UNP members have voted for the no confidence motion.

The no confidence motion against the Chairman of the North Central Provincial council has been included to the council order paper on July 13th as well.

Meanwhile, a group of UNP MPs who entered the chairman’s office has taken away the mace.

A brawl between the two factions has taken place at this time.

UNP Members recovered a part of the mace from the washing room of the chairman’s office.

Later, D.M. Amaratunga was elected as the chairman of the North Central Provincial Council.

The new chairman was sworn in before the North Central Provincial Governor P.B. Dissanayake this afternoon.

Meanwhile UNP member Anil Rathnayake expressed his views at a media conference held this afternoon.

When our news team contacted Joint Opposition member S.M. Ranjith said that they are ready to seek legal action against the new appointment of a chairman.
