Police stated that due to there being several warrants for the arrest of the convenor of the Medical Faculty Students’ steering committee, Rayan Jayalath, they were prepared to do so.

Police said that charges had been levelled against him in connection with several offences including trespassing on ministry of health premises and causing damage to public property.

Police Media Spokesman’s office also said that a tense situation cropped up in the GMOA office premises yesterday when attempting to arrest Medical Faculty Students’ steering committee convener Rayan Jayalath.

The organization called “Anti-SAITM People’s Wall” convened a media briefing inside the GMOA office yesterday.

A group that included the GMOA, Inter-university Students’ Federation representatives, JVP’s  political councilor  K.D. Laalkaantha  and Frontline Socialist Party media spokesman Duminda Naagamuwa  participated in the media briefing.

Several persons in civvies attempted to arrest the convenor of the  Medical Faculty Students’ steering committee  Rayan Jayalath as he was leaving the  media briefing.

However our correspondent said that as the commotion came to an end, those individuals wearing civvies left the site in a white van.

Meanwhile in Kekirawa yesterday, university students who were distributing handbills, creating public awareness against SAITM were assaulted by a group.

Inter-university students’ federation acting convener Sanath Bandaara told our news team that the group, that included UNP MP Chandima Gamagey had carried out this assault.
