Out of the plans submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board focussing on power generation in the island from 2018 to 2037, the Public Utilities Commission has approved the plan devoid of coal power generation.

Director General Damitha Kumarasinghe stated that the decision was taken considering public views and environmental factors.

4,800 Megawatts of power is expected to be generated through natural gases while solar power generation is expected to be increased to 1,389 Megawatts.
