President advises IGP to take necessary action for the protection of all judges

President Maithreepala Sirisena has advised the IGP to take special measures for the protection of judges following the shooting incident in Jaffna.

The president also ordered an immediate investigation into the incident by deploying special police teams.

President Maithreepala Sirisena has condemened the shooting which took place when Jaffna high court judge M. Illancheliyan was traveling in his vehicle.

In a communiqué issued by the president’s media unit, the president had expressed his condolences with regard to the death of the police sergeant Sarath Premachandra.  

Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilanchchelian has expressed his condolences during the post-mortem examination and expressed his gratitude to the wife of the police constable, who sacrificed his life to protect the judge.

The post-mortem examination of the 57 year old police constable Sarath Premachandra was held this morning at the Jaffna hospital to where his wife was present.

The Jaffna high court judge had also previously visited the injured constable in hospital.

Justice Ilancheliyan is a member of the trial-at-bar hearing, the high profile murder case of schoolgirl Vithya in Jaffna.

The motorcycle escorting the High court judge, was shot at last evening.

The police constable who was receiving treatment at the Jaffna teaching hospital succumbed to injuries early this morning and the post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was due to internal bleeding as a result of being shot.

Police noted that 2 suspects involved in the incident have been arrested.

Police Media spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that one of the suspects, is the elder brother of the main suspect.  

Even though the high court judge initially stated that the shooting took place targeting him, the police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara convening a media briefing held at the police headquarters noted that the shooting was an un-anticipated incident.

Furthermore, all private buses in the Northern province have decided to launch a strike tomorrow, condemning the shooting incident which took place in Nallur yesterday.
