Queues to fill up at petrol stations were excessively long last evening,as word got out about a strike being launched by the petroleum trade unions at midnight,  based on several demands.

According to our correspondent, traffic congestion was heavy in several locations throughout the main cities.

The convener of the collective, D.J Raajakaruna noted that officials had not provided solutions for their demands , though it has been more than 3 months since the issues had been made known.

He added that the strike would be carried out continuously.

Our correspondent made an observation that Politburo member of the JVP K.D Lalkantha was also witnessed waiting in queue at a petrol station in Nawala.

Meanwhile, doctors at hospitals are to launch an island wide token strike beginning at 8 this morning.

The strike is to be launched based several objections, including objection to the attempted abduction of Ryan Jayalath, the convenor of the Medical Faculty Students' Action Committee.
