At the conclusion of a discussion between President Maithripala Sirisena and the Petroleum Trade Unions, the Petroleum Trade Unions’ Collective decided to temporarily hold off on continue the strike, till next Tuesday.

The Collective convener D. J. Rajakarunaa told our news team that accordingly fuel distribution for essential services began last afternoon.

The convener also said that other distribution activities will begin this morning.

The Petroleum Trade Unions launched the strike on Tuesday midnight voicing their protest against three issues, the takeover of the Trincomalee Oil Tanks by Petroleum Corporation, takeover of the Hambantota Oil Terminal and taking prompt action to overhaul Sapugaskanda Refinery.

The government declared distribution of petroleum an essential service day on Tuesday and, army troops were ordered to enter the Kolonnawa oil terminal complex early yesterday morning.

Later, the army and police took measures to remove the strikers from the site and provide security to other workers enabling them to perform their duties.

At the same time, riot police were called on to disperse another group of strikers who were blocking off an oil tanker train.

Police media spokesman stated that 16 Petroleum workers who behaved in an unruly manner were arrested and later released on police bail after statement were recorded.
