The Disaster management Centre said that 1 million 197 thousand 365 people have been affected by the drought prevalent in 19 districts.

Northern Province is the worst affected as 495 thousand 994 persons are distressed due to the drought.

Meanwhile, residents in 6 villages in Anuradhapura are at risk as wild elephants desperate for water have been breaking in to villages.

Our correspondent stated that people in Palaagala, Mirihampitiya, Kirindiwaththa, Galkiriyaagama, Dennaawa and Unduruwa were at risk as elephants from the Kahalla – Pallekele forest reserve were making their way to the village.
