A tense situation erupted in the North Central Provincial council session as the Opposition protested against the new chairman D.M. Amaratunga.

The 14 members of the Joint Opposition wore black ribbons during the session.

Former health minister K.H. Nandasena objected to the appointment of the new chairman.

In addition Oppositon Leader Anil Rathnayake said the appointment was made without the Councils approval.

Later during the session, Opposition members set the order book on fire and left the meeting chamber.

Our correspondents stated that following the eruption,  the session continued on as per norm.
