Several districts experience rain breaking the prolonged drought conditions

Several areas in the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya and Batticaloa had rainfall for around two hours this morning ,  ending the prolonged  drought conditions that had lasted over 6 months last evening.

It is reported that heavy rainfall was experienced in Naachchaduwa, Wilachchiya, Thantirimale, Kekirawa, Rajanganaya and Mihintale in the Anuradhapura district.

Meanwhile, 80% of the Polonnaruwa district including Minneriya, Welikanda and Medirigiriya also experienced heavy rainfall today.

Earlier today Heavy rainfall was reported throughout vavuniya but currently the rain has ceased.

Meanwhile, Irrigation Director of the North Central Province Jayantha Herath told our news team that 3 thousand irrigation tanks out of 3 thousand 300 in the province have dried up.

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Center Pradeep Kodippili stated that nearly 1.2 million persons in 15 districts have been affected by the prevailing drought.
