1 million 242 thousand 140 persons have been affected due to the drought prevalent in 19 districts in the island.

The majority of those affected are from the Northern Province and the figure stands at 503 thousand 183.

Assistant Director of the Irrigations Department T P Alwis said that the water levels of 73 large and medium size reservoirs that come under its purview have dropped to 14 percent.

Meanwhile, Media Spokesperson of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy Sulakshana Jayawardana said that water levels of reservoirs used for hydro power generation currently stands at 39.7 percent.
